The
Marine City area shares the rich heritage of southeastern Michigan. The
lands along the St. Clair River were explored by fur traders and
missionaries in the early 1700s. Holy Cross Parish was started by Fr.
Gabriel Richard in 1825, when a triangular plot of land at the
convergence of the Belle and St. Clair Rivers. Marine City was founded
in 1834 as the village of Newport. The name of the village was later
changed to Ward's Landing and ultimately to Marine City. Council 856 was founded
on March 20, 1904 through the efforts of a group of parish men from Holy
Cross Parish. The Charter was applied for with the approval and support
of an enthusiastic, young Catholic priest, Fr. Peter J. Ternes. Council 856 works closely with
Holy Cross Parish in Marine City, providing
funds for various projects, members being active participants in their
parish.
